ABOUT
The Touro Synagogue, located at 72 Touro Street in Newport, Rhode Island, is a historic site that serves as a testament to the early commitment of the colony to religious pluralism. The building was constructed between 1759 and 1763 for the Jeshuat Israel congregation and was formally dedicated on December 2, 1763. It features unique architectural elements, including columns carved from a single tree and a mural representing the Ten Commandments in Hebrew.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The congregation annually reads President Washington's letter on religious pluralism, which adds an educational component to the visit.
GOOD TO KNOW
Founded by fifteen Spanish Jewish families who arrived in 1658, Touro Synagogue is the oldest active synagogue in the United States. The congregation initially worshiped in private homes for over a century before constructing the synagogue. It remains an active place of worship and is involved in various community activities, reflecting its ongoing historical significance.
