BRISTOL
BRISTOL HISTORICAL & PRESERVATION SOCIETY
Updated
ABOUT
The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society is located at 48 Court Street in Bristol, Rhode Island, within a historic 1828 jail constructed from granite blocks. Founded in 1936, the Society is dedicated to promoting the history of Bristol through education, research, and the preservation of historic objects. As a 501(c)(3) organization, it has transformed the former jail into a museum, library, and meeting space, housing a diverse collection of over 1,800 books and documents of regional and local historical interest, along with photographs, objects, and portraits.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Families visiting the Society can explore a variety of exhibits that delve into the history of Bristol, including the impact of different ethnic groups that settled in the area over a 90-year period. The Society offers walking tours and self-guided maps for those interested in exploring the town's historical sites. Additionally, the Society hosts the Genie Club, which meets monthly and is open to anyone curious about their roots, making it suitable for visitors of all ages.
GOOD TO KNOW
The Society was initially housed in the Rogers Free Library before moving to the jail after a disastrous fire in 1957. It changed its name to the Bristol Historical and Preservation Society in 1972 to reflect its focus on preservation efforts. The Society played a significant role in the formation of historic district zoning in 1987 and has been instrumental in establishing four other museums in Bristol, including the Bristol Art Museum and the Coggeshall Farm and Museum.
