ABOUT
Rose Island Lighthouse is a historic site located on Rose Island in Newport, Rhode Island. The island is named for its shape, which resembles a rose at low tide. It is operated by the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation, a private, non-profit organization. The lighthouse has served as an aid to navigation for a century and was restored to its Victorian appearance as of 2008. The island also features fortifications constructed during the American Revolution and was used by the Navy to store explosives during both World Wars.
GOOD TO KNOW
The lighthouse was deactivated in 1970 after the government ceased using the island, which was declared government surplus. In 1984, a group of citizens founded the Newport Lighthouse Foundation to preserve the lighthouse.
