GILBERT STUART BIRTHPLACE & MUSEUM
Updated
ABOUT
It features the 1751 colonial home where Gilbert Stuart, a renowned American portraitist, was born. The museum includes an operational snuff mill, a working grist mill, and a welcome center with an art gallery showcasing works by both Stuart and his daughter, Jane Stuart.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Families visiting the museum can explore the authentically restored home and participate in docent-guided or self-guided tours of the birthplace and gristmill. Visitors can enjoy nature trails that lead to a colonial burial ground, the Benjamin Hammond cemetery, and a scenic overlook of Carr Pond. The museum also features an herb garden and previously offered a junior docent program designed to teach children about history and museum operations.
GOOD TO KNOW
The Gilbert Stuart Birthplace was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965 and is recognized as the site of the first snuff mill in America, built by Stuart's father in the early 1730s. The museum provides a rich historical experience with its restored colonial furnishings and exhibitions of period works, making it a valuable educational resource.
