Originally founded as the Pettaquamscutt Historical Society in 1958, it was established by local residents interested in history and historic preservation. The center focuses on the preservation and promotion of South County’s rich and diverse history and operates under its current name since May 2016.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Families visiting the South County History Center can explore various exhibits that reflect the geographic boundaries of Washington County, which includes towns such as Charlestown, Exeter, and Narragansett.
GOOD TO KNOW
The South County History Center was founded to commemorate the 1658 Pettaquamscutt Purchase, where settlers acquired 49 square miles from the Narragansett Sachems. The center's mission has evolved through a strategic planning process initiated in 2015, aiming to adapt to the changing needs of the community.
