PAWTUCKET
SLATER MILL MUSEUM
Updated
ABOUT
Built in 1793, it was the first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill in the United States, utilizing the Arkwright system for textile production.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Visitors can enjoy guided tours lasting about 55 minutes, led by trained interpreters who share the mill's rich history. The Sylvanus Brown House features textile artifacts, including a loom and spinning wheel, while the Wilkinson Mill demonstrates 19th-century machinery in operation. Educational programs are tailored for families and school groups, and various music concerts and events are hosted throughout the year, enhancing the visitor experience.
GOOD TO KNOW
Founded in 1921 by local businesspeople, the Old Slater Mill Association aimed to preserve the mill, which operated until 1895. After extensive restoration, the mill was returned to its 1835 appearance and is now managed by the National Park Service as a museum and educational center. The mill is part of the Blackstone River Valley National Historic Park, and visitors can find current information on hours and admission on the National Park Service website.
