LOOFF CAROUSEL AT SLATER PARK
Updated
ABOUT
The Looff Carousel at Slater Park is a historic carousel located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and is one of only six historic carousels in the United States that still resides in its original building. This carousel features intricately carved horses in Looff's "Coney Island" style, characterized by slender legs and expressive faces, and is adorned with Czechoslovak cut glass jewels, real horsehair tails, and ornate saddles. The carousel is operated by the city's Parks and Recreation Department, which manages various recreational facilities and programs in Pawtucket.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Families visiting the carousel can enjoy rides on the beautifully designed horses, which are known for their dynamic poses and expressive features. In addition to regular rides, the carousel can be rented for birthday parties and private events, providing a delightful backdrop for celebrations. The carousel also participates in Pawtucket's annual Winter Wonderland Festival, offering limited hours during this festive season.
GOOD TO KNOW
The carousel began operation in July 1910 after being relocated from New York to Slater Park. It was saved from demolition in 1971 due to community efforts led by the Pawtucket Junior Women's Club, which successfully petitioned the city to halt the auction of its horses and animals. Following extensive restoration, the carousel reopened to the public in 1979. It operates seasonally, with rides available on weekends in May, June, September, and October, as well as daily in July and August. To maintain its historical integrity, twelve animals are cycled off each year for rehabilitation.
