ABOUT

The URI W. Alton Jones Camp is a 2,300-acre environmental camp, nature preserve, and conference center located in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. It is operated by the University of Rhode Island and features the Environmental Education Center, the Whispering Pines Conference Center, and Woodvale Farm. The campus is undergoing a $2 million renovation to enhance its facilities and public access.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Families visiting the camp can expect to engage in a variety of outdoor activities, including exploring the trails that connect to adjacent properties like Arcadia and Tillinghast Pond. The Environmental Education Center offers award-winning camps for children, catering to a wide age range, and the Whispering Pines Conference Center hosts numerous events, including 350 conferences and 50 weddings annually. The site is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, with over 1,000 species documented on the property.

GOOD TO KNOW

The camp was founded in 1962 after the death of its namesake, William Alton Jones, an oil executive who used the site as a private retreat. It has a rich history, including visits from President Dwight Eisenhower and its use as a temporary hideout for an organized crime informant. The campus has been maintained for research, teaching, and community activities, and it aims to expand public access and environmental education as it reopens on Labor Day.
