ABOUT

Established in 1997, BIMI operates from the historic Smuggler’s Cove on the Great Salt Pond, which is recognized by The Nature Conservancy as one of the last great places on earth. The institute features an outdoor aquarium with five tanks showcasing local marine species, enhancing the educational experience for visitors.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Families visiting BIMI can engage in a variety of hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity about the marine environment. Programs include the Fishing Academy for children ages 6-14, where they can learn fishing skills in a safe environment, and the Tuesday Talk series, featuring scientists and historians sharing insights about marine life. Visitors can also enjoy a relaxing hour-long tour of the Great Salt Pond aboard a historic 26-ft. Oldport Launch, learning about local history and ecology.

GOOD TO KNOW

BIMI was founded by a group of summer and year-round residents who aimed to prevent the sale of Smuggler’s Cove to developers. For nearly two decades, the institute has been dedicated to cultivating curiosity and appreciation for the marine environment. It operates seasonally during the summer months, and while there is no admission fee, donations are encouraged to support its educational mission.
